Event 2 of 5Upper-Body Endurance

Hand-Release Push-Up (HRP)

The HRP measures upper-body and core muscular endurance. It simulates pushing open heavy doors, repetitive obstacle navigation, and engaging from the prone position under combat load.

Official Execution & Repetition Standards

Soldiers begin in the prone position with hands flat on the ground. On the command "GO," they push up to a front leaning rest, lower the chest to the ground, extend both arms fully out to a 90-degree 'T' position, bring hands back under shoulders, and push back up.

The 4 Movement Phases of a Valid Repetition:

  • Phase 1 (Ascent): Push up from ground with body remaining in a straight line from head to ankles until elbows are fully extended.
  • Phase 2 (Descent): Lower the body in a controlled straight plane until chest and thighs touch the ground.
  • Phase 3 (Arm Extension): Lift hands off the ground and extend arms straight out to the sides (forming a 90-degree angle with the torso).
  • Phase 4 (Return & Push): Place hands back beneath shoulders and execute the next repetition.

Authorized Rest Positions:

Soldiers may rest only in the front leaning rest position (arms extended, straight body) or in the flexed (pike/sag) position with hands and feet remaining on the ground. Resting on the ground between repetitions will terminate the event.
